BGS Blog is a long-overdue interdisciplinary initiative that seeks to begin to close the gap in research-informed content on Black Girlhood Studies for Black girls and Black women. We are keen to publish short articles, and there are also opportunities to submit poems, flash stories, raps, songs and visually artistic pieces as part of our collection of blogs – the latter is subject to special call for blogs.

All content sent for publishing are edited and approved by our blog editors.

This blog is for Black girls/Black women. Black girls/Black women refers to any girl/woman of African descent and racialised as Black — this includes Black mixed girls/women, and girls/women who are Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latino, and other members of the diaspora such as Garifuna/Garinagu.

This blog is not specific to geographic location, or nationality.

We are non-binary gender and trans femme presenting inclusive.

How to Blog Pitch Your Idea

Pitch Requirements

  • Your blog pitch must be written in English
  • Please write between 100 and 200 words for your pitch
  • Provide 150 word biography, a portrait photo and social media handles (e.g., IG, X/Twitter, Bluesky and LinkedIn)

Portrait Photo Specifications:

  • File Format: JPEG, PNG, JPG, or GIF
  • Maximum File Size: 2MB
  • Recommended Dimensions: Minimum 800x800 pixels, square format preferred
  • Quality: High resolution, clear and well-lit portrait

Submission Process

Send the pitch, biography and photo to info@blackgirlstreams.com

In the email subject bar write: Blog Pitch – [insert title of your blog idea] – [3 out of your 5 key words]

Our editor will aim to respond to your pitch within 10 working days.

Blog Submission Guidelines

Content Requirements

  • Provide 5 key words
  • 500 – 700 wordcount excluding reference list (Harvard Style Referencing)
  • Provide hyperlinks for in-text references where applicable
  • You can use one image that you have permission to use (this is different to image-based blogs where more than one image is permitted via call for blogs). All images provided must be appropriately attributed/cited.
  • All submission written text must be in English

Approval Process

  • Blogs can only be approved by editors, and after approval, it will be published.
  • Blogs go through an editorial process to support you with ensuring that they meet the expected standard.

All BGS blog authors agree to license their writings under Creative Commons Licence Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 4.0 International

Q. How frequent do you publish blogs?

A. We aim to publish 1–2 blogs per month.

Q. How long does it take from accepted pitch to blog submission?

A. The expectation is 6 to 8 weeks turnaround from pitch to blog submission.

Q. What type of editing do the Editors provide?

A. Editors offer light touch editing for example formatting and proofreading, as opposed to content editing or development. Please ensure that your contribution is near finished as possible on submission. Submissions that have been supported with grammar checker software/function are permitted; AI generated content are not — please disclose if grammar checker software have been used.
